This article is about benefits to the country by cutting down energy wastage. The hot economies in most of the country will more than double their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions within a generation with major impacts on global energy markets and the global climate, unless energy efficiency efforts are successful.
Accelerated polar ice melting is the latest indication that severe climate change may be upon us. The current 380 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere seem already too high. Roughly half of the global consumption of fossil fuels should be avoided if climate is to be stabilized. Using energy much more wisely is one of the very few feasible ways that, combined, would move the world towards this goal without economic disruption. Therefore this can be avoided through minimizing energy wastages.
Energy costs average over 10 percent of the gross national product, so that any government program aimed to reduce it. Recession-inflation could well employ energy conservation, in order to squeeze unproductive energy dollars back into the non-energy part of the economy. Even before considering the question of how much energy to import, one must confront energy conservation today. Inefficient energy use means inefficient (and costly) mis-functions in all the economy. Therefore this can be avoided in the course of minimizing energy wastages.
This adds up to hundreds of billions of dollars on saved energy costs over the next 10 to 15 years. It could help prevent or delay the need for building dozens of new power plants or other new energy infrastructure. In addition, it can help create jobs, keep energy prices reasonable, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
