Nominated sub contractors

Nominated sub contractors can be identified as the contractors who are specifically refered under the main contract of the project. That mean nominated sub contractors are selected by the client. Therefore, once the project is awarded to the contractor, main contractor should get the service of those nominated sub contractor to carry out those specified works.

Therefore there is no flexibility for the main contractor to select those nominated sub contractors.

Even though, main contractor can make reasonable objection to go ahead with those nominated sub contractors based on their past experience, believing that sub contractor is lack of financial capacity and qualification to carry out the work, if the sub contractor does not agree to indemnify the contractor against and any misconduct by the nominated sub contractor.

In general practice, nominated sub contractors are appointed to carry out works under Provisional sums. Therefore, main contractor is entitled to claim attendance, builders works and his markup on top of nominated sub contractors value of work done.

December 23, 2016 0
Acceleration in Construction Projects

Acceleration is the process of increasing the rate of progress of construction work in order to complete the project on an earlier date than it intended to be.

There are two types of acceleration;

1. Instructive acceleration

Employer instruct the contractor to accelerate  the rate of progress in order to finish it and hand over on a earlier date than date stated in the contract document or when Contractor entitle for extension of time under the contract.

2. Instructive or Directive acceleration

Under this heading, acceleration process is initiated by the Contractor in order to finish the project on time when he lags behind the rate of progress.

Acceleration of the project can be done in several ways.

Provide additional resources to the project like increase number of work force and machineries involved in the project.

Revise the method of construction. For example, carrying out offsite fabrication, using pre cast concrete. Using new mode of form work systems, using tower cranes, batching plants and etc.

Revise the project program in order to finish project faster. For example, carrying out many parallel activities at the same time.

Increase the working hours and work on shift basis,. As well as work on weekends, public holidays and etc.

As well as there might have some specification and design changes which increase the rate of progress.
